How Ground Mount Solar Installation Works

Ground mounted solar installation works differently to rooftop solar because the system is built directly onto the land rather than the property itself. This allows far more flexibility over where the panels sit, how they’re angled and how large the overall system can be.

Before installation, the land is assessed to check things like usable space, shading, ground conditions and cable routing back to the property. The panels are then installed onto a fixed-tilt mounting system designed to support the solar array securely long term.

Because the system isn’t restricted by the roof layout, ground mounted solar panels can often be positioned more effectively for sunlight exposure throughout the day. For properties with unsuitable roofs or more available land, this can open up options that rooftop systems simply can’t.

Is Ground Mounted Solar Right for Your Property?

If you have available land and want more flexibility than a roof-based system can offer, a ground mount solar system installation is worth exploring. It can be a strong route for properties where the roof is limited, unsuitable or simply not the best place to install panels. It can work particularly well for:

Whether you’re exploring domestic ground mounted solar panels or a larger commercial ground mount solar system, P4 Solar can assess the land and recommend the most suitable setup for your property and energy usage.

Things to Consider Before Installation

Ground mounted solar gives more flexibility around positioning and system size than rooftop solar, but the site still needs to be assessed properly before installation. The main things to consider are:

P4 Solar can carry out a full site assessment and talk you through what’s realistic for the land, expected generation, installation requirements and whether ground mounted PV panels are the best option for your property.

Get a Starting Point on Cost & Savings

If you have land available, the next question is usually whether the numbers make sense. The cost of a ground mounted solar installation depends on the system size, land setup, cable route and installation requirements, while long-term savings depend on how much of the generated electricity the property can use.

Use the calculator below to get an estimated installation cost and potential energy savings in just a few simple steps. P4 Solar can then assess the site properly and provide a tailored recommendation based on the land, system size and installation requirements.

Compare Other Ways to Install Solar

Ground mounted solar is useful when the land gives you more opportunity than the roof, but it isn’t always the simplest or most cost-effective route. If your roof is suitable, or if you’re already planning roofing work, one of the options below may make more sense.

Roof Top Solar Panels

Often the best fit for homes with roofs already in good condition. It uses the existing roof space, avoids groundworks and is usually quicker to install than a ground mount system.

In-Roof Solar Panels

A strong option if roof work is already planned. Because the panels replace sections of roof tile, in-roof solar can be a neater choice for new builds, re-roofs and renovation projects.
