Off-Grid Solar Installation Case Study – West Deeping, Lincolnshire

Off grid solar installation in Lincolnshire

Customer Background

This residential customer, based in West Deeping, Lincolnshire, became increasingly interested in the benefits of solar energy in 2022 following significant increases in energy costs and continued uncertainty around future electricity prices. Looking to take greater control of household energy expenditure while embracing a more sustainable lifestyle, the homeowner began exploring renewable energy solutions.

The detached property benefits from a substantial amount of surrounding land, making it well suited to a ground-mounted solar installation. However, the property's relatively remote location required an extensive cable route to ensure a feasible installation.

The Challenge

The installation presented practical challenges. To accommodate the solar panel and battery storage system, a trench extending approximately 300 metres was required across the property. This included a 250-metre trench through a nearby field and a further 50 metres connecting the main house to an outbuilding where the batteries would be housed. The homeowner assisted by arranging the trench excavation work ahead of the installation.

The Solution

Following a detailed site survey, the P4 team designed a bespoke ground mounted solar solution tailored to the property's requirements.

The design process included a comprehensive assessment of the household's energy consumption, peak power demand and any high-energy appliances. The team also evaluated the site's solar potential, including orientation, shading, available installation space and local weather conditions.

Given the extensive electricity usage, particular emphasis was placed on battery storage capacity to ensure sufficient energy availability during evenings and extended periods of low solar generation. The resulting system was designed to deliver reliable, year-round energy independence while providing long-term protection from rising energy costs.

The Installation

Due to the scale and remote nature of the project, the installation required careful planning and coordination. Ground-mounted solar panels were installed within the available land, while the battery storage system was located within an outbuilding to maximise space and accessibility.

Extensive trenching works were completed to connect the solar array, battery storage system, and property infrastructure. Despite the additional engineering requirements, the project was completed successfully and commissioned to provide a fully operational energy solution.

The Benefits

The completed installation provides the homeowner with complete energy independence while significantly reducing exposure to future energy price increases.

Additional benefits include:

  • Long-term protection from rising electricity costs

  • Reduced carbon emissions and environmental impact

  • Scalable infrastructure to support future energy demands

  • Reliable year-round electricity generation and storage

The Outcome

The project successfully transformed a remote property into a self-sufficient energy system powered by renewable energy. By combining a large ground-mounted solar array with appropriately sized battery storage, the homeowner now benefits from greater control over energy usage, reduced running costs, and the confidence that comes with long-term energy security.

The installation demonstrates how a carefully designed solar solution can provide a practical and sustainable alternative for larger scaled properties.
