Martin obtains extremely large energy bills and was eager to reduce his electricity fees. After noticing our installation at Ben Rhydding Scout Guides Group, he reached out to P4 Solar, where we arranged an initial visit to assess the scope of a large ground-mounted solar panels in Harrogate and battery storage system.
Key Details
Initial Investigation:
After studying Martin’s energy bill, it became clear that a sizeable PV array would be necessary to meet his energy needs. However, P4 Solar investigated an optimum figure for the number of panels that would cover 70% of his electrical usage. To increase this figure, the number of panels would have to be more than doubled which would have inherited much further cost. Thus, 70% being a realistic target. This was achieved by designing 48 AIKO 455W solar panels. Additionally, a suitable battery storage system to store excess energy for later use.
Groundwork Preparation:
During various site visits, we identified a field 50 meters from the incoming power supply as the most suitable location for the solar panels. Groundwork was required to create a level platform for the installation, and we sized a cable to ensure the energy output remained consistent. Excavation work was completed to safely run the cable from the panels to the power supply. Once this was done, we began assembling the solar panel frame.
Solar Panel Mounting System:
We used the Solar Port ground-mounted platform to provide a robust base for the panels, securing it with 100 20kg bags of post mix concrete. The X Anchor foundation allowed for shallow embedment, and the high-quality steel structure ensured a long-lasting and future-proofed installation.
Solar Panel Installation:
Once the ground mounted frame was constructed, we fitted the AIKO 455W all-black solar panels, currently the most efficient all-black panels available. These not only deliver excellent performance but are aesthetically pleasing. The system is expected to generate over 20,000 kWh annually, a remarkable figure for a residential solution.
Solar Panel Battery Storage:
To capture surplus energy, we designed a 30kWh battery storage system, enabling Martin to use solar power during the evening. With an electric vehicle, he can also charge the batteries at the subsidised EV rate, enabling him to exploit cheaper downloading during the winter when solar panel generation is reduced.
We installed Duracell inverters and batteries, known for their reliability and advanced technology. The 30kWh system is sufficient but can be expanded within the future. Equipped with A-grade cells, the batteries offer the longest lifespan and highest charge rates, maximising return on investment. Additionally, Duracell’s intelligent software automatically manages charging and discharging based on weather conditions to maintain battery health, creating an efficient and future-ready energy solution for Martin.

We were looking for a solar system for our property which consists of two houses and a spa. We had four initial quotes which varied enormously, I was also sceptical about knowledge and experience of these companies and their products and people. We then had discussions with our architect who we’ve worked with for a number of years. He was able to take a number of references from other people who he’d worked with on there solar systems. The whole installation went really smoothly with the various teams all working together. The system is now fully commissioned and we can see from the usage our electricity costs have dramatically decreased and the battery system has reduced it further.
