Customer Background

Village halls play a vital role in rural communities, providing a shared space where residents can come together, socialise, learn new skills and access local services. For many villages, they are at the heart of community life, helping to strengthen connections, support wellbeing and preserve local identity.

Located just six miles north of York, Strensall and Towthorpe Village Hall serves as a popular venue for local groups, events, classes, and community activities. The hall is managed by a dedicated volunteer committee responsible for its day-to-day operation, maintenance, finances and bookings.

Beyond their social value, village halls also contribute to the local economy by providing affordable space for businesses, markets, charities and community organisations.

The Challenge

Like many village halls across the UK, Strensall and Towthorpe Village Hall has faced increasing operational costs in recent years. Rising energy prices have placed additional pressure on budgets, making it more challenging for volunteer-run facilities to maintain affordable access for the local community.

The management committee wanted to reduce the hall’s reliance on grid electricity, gain greater control over future energy costs and improve the long-term financial sustainability of the building. Solar energy presented an opportunity to lower running costs while supporting the hall’s environmental goals.

As a community facility, the hall was also eligible for a variety of grant funding opportunities that support energy-efficiency improvements and renewable energy projects, helping to make sustainability investments more accessible.

The Solution

Following a detailed site survey and energy assessment, our team designed a bespoke solar PV and battery storage system tailored to the hall’s energy requirements and building layout.

The installation included:

  • 14 x AIKO 460 W Solar Panels

  • Renusol Mounting for Metal Corrugated Roof

  • 1 x Hanchu ESS 3.6 kW Hybrid Inverter

  • 1 x Hanchu ESS 5.12 kWh Battery Storage Unit

This system was designed to maximise on-site generation while enabling excess solar energy to be stored and used during evenings and periods of higher demand. The addition of battery storage helps to increase self-consumption and further reduce reliance on grid electricity.

The Installation

The installation was carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to the hall’s regular community activities. The solar PV system was integrated seamlessly into the building, with careful consideration given to aesthetics, performance, and long-term durability.

The system now provides a reliable source of renewable energy, helping to reduce day-to-day operating costs and improve energy resilience.

The Outcome

The installation delivers both immediate and long-term benefits for Strensall and Towthorpe Village Hall, including:

  • Reduced electricity bills and operating costs

  • Increased energy independence

  • Improved use of renewable energy through battery storage

  • Lower carbon emissions and environmental impact

  • Greater financial resilience for the management committee

  • More funds available for community events, maintenance, and improvements
